Level Up: I’m on Newsarama
I had a few resolutions for this new year. There was one that I didn’t make public, though, because it seemed so unattainable that I didn’t want to embarrass myself:
I wanted to get published on a big-time website.
I’m talking a legitimate, well-established news source, a site that people regularly visit for quality content (which, by the way, is precisely what we’re trying to do with comics.tumblr) where I could carve out a name for myself as a decent writer. Comic Book Resources, ComicsAlliance… Newsarama. Do you know how long I’ve been a fan of Newsarama? I’ll tell you: a long time. The staff there have close connections with major companies and some of the top professionals in the industry. The writing is top-notch. The site itself has won a number of awards and consistently breaks top stories. If there’s a comic book-related event in New York City, I always see someone from Newsarama there covering it.
So, imagine my surprise when the editor for the Newsarama reviews column, Best Shots, contacted me with an invitation to test my skills and maybe even… join the group.
Imagine my further surprise when I submitted test pieces and… made it in.
I’m proud to say that I’m now a contributor at Newsarama! To be honest, I’m still in shock. As someone without an academic background in journalism, I’ve struggled to learn the “ways” on my own. My internship at Marvel helped tremendously and acting as an administrator at comics.tumblr is teaching me a great deal every day, but sitting down and cranking out articles on a weekly basis with the guidance of an editor will really give me the extra push I need. Here’s hoping that the rest of 2014 will continue as spectacularly as it’s begun!
