ilikecomicstoo is dead
Hey. It’s been a while. My hair’s a little different. Let’s talk about I’m starting over.
How has YouTube changed?
I’ve been on YouTube off and on for about ten years now, which is wild to think about. When I first started, there weren’t really many ladies talking about comics on the platform and, in fact, those who watched my channel were surprised to see a lady talking about comics. I don’t know if I ever explained the logic behind the whole “I like comics too” persona, but I created it to make that idea less jarring because I knew that there was a big, vibrant community of women who were also into the hobby. I didn’t want that to be seen as weird or super unusual.
Since then, the landscape has changed (for the better, I think!). There are tons of ladies talking about comics now. There are whole websites dedicated to our perspective, whole lines of clothing dedicated to geeky wear for women. It’s great!
It also means there’s an opportunity for what I do to shift. I wanna get back into YouTube! I miss creating, I miss video editing, I miss interacting with the community. But, while there’s still a lot of room for growth for women in the hobby, I want to focus on more of what I like and less of what the Internet expects me to like.
Why change now?
I haven’t been able to lean into other hobbies because, well… my audience expected comics, and I was always afraid that if I diverged too much from that subject I’d lose you all. So, I burnt out pretty quickly. That’s part of why I became so inactive.
(I don’t want to lose you all, for the record. I hope you’ll stick around, because I think there’s some exciting stuff coming up!)
Bottom line: I still like comics, but I also like other things and I want to explore those other interests more. I like makeup, fashion, cosplay, custom toys, travel. Like any human, I’m into all sorts.
I know that YouTube these days is divided into niches and diverging from those niches means it’s very difficult to build an audience, but that’s okay. I’m not doing this for money or fame, I’m genuinely doing this because it’s fun and I miss creating.
What’s changing?
I’ve completely overhauled my “brand.” New site, new socials, even a new logo courtesy of Julie. Now, my image isn’t just tied to comics. It’s tied to me!
I hope that you’ll give my new content a chance, because I think I’ll have a little bit of something for everyone. But if it’s not your cup of tea anymore, that’s OK too. I hope I provided some entertainment during these last ten years. :)
If you wanna stick around, you can subscribe to the YouTube channel here or check me out on Twitter and Instagram.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and welcome to marlene does!
